Education & Background
Yang Qian, a prominent figure in the first generation of Chinese Contemporary artists, was born in Chengdu, China. He received his education at the Sichuan Fine Art Institute from 1982 to 1984 and later pursued an MFA at the University of Florida in the United States in 1988. Throughout his career, Yang has held various teaching positions and gained international recognition with exhibitions at esteemed institutions like the National Museum of China in Beijing, the National Museum of Contemporary Art in Seoul, and the Czech National Art Museum in Prague.
Yang’s art is rich in meaning, often incorporating multiple layers within each piece. While his subjects vary, they frequently feature females and draw inspiration from everyday life. His work blurs the lines between illusion and reality, challenging the viewer’s perception. Yang is known for pushing the boundaries of two-dimensional painting by exploring new media and departing from traditional techniques and limitations.
His contributions have earned him a place in impressive public and private collections, notably including the permanent collection of the National Museum of China. With a substantial presence in the art market, over 100 of his artworks have been sold through auctions, achieving a record price of USD$101,550.
Yang Qian has enjoyed widespread exposure through more than 20 solo exhibitions held internationally in countries such as China, Taiwan, Singapore, Indonesia, the U.S., the U.K., and Italy. Additionally, he has actively participated in prestigious international art fairs like the Prague Biennale, Art Basel by Gallery Hyundai, Busan Biennale in Korea, Seville Biennale in Spain, Art Beijing, and Poznan Biennale in Poland.
