Education & Background
Ren Zhe, born in Beijing in 1983, is famous in modern Chinese sculpture for his stainless-steel warrior sculptures. These sculptures capture a strong and still feeling, portraying a sense of weight and power. Ren studied at Tsinghua University’s Academy of Fine Arts Sculpture Department, earning both bachelor’s and master’s degrees. Since a young age, he has been captivated by heroic figures from epic myths and ancient stories, which are recurring subjects in his artworks.
Ren’s sculptures beautifully blend traditional Chinese aesthetics and philosophies with contemporary artistic expression, exemplified by pieces like Above the Clouds (2017) and Utmost Wonder (2015). These artworks, such as Noble Tranquility (2012) and Divinity Generals (2016), draw from his extensive study of Chinese literary classics, music, calligraphy, and painting. His sculptures, like those mentioned, portray warriors as symbols of noble human ideals, reflecting his deep respect for history and classical values. Ren’s technique is firmly rooted in Chinese artistic traditions, skillfully transforming these abstract concepts into tangible forms using materials like concrete, stainless steel, or bronze.
Starting in 2005, Ren Zhe has received significant praise and recognition in the auction market, initially in Asia and later on a global scale. His artworks are extensively collected by institutions worldwide and have earned esteemed international awards. Ren’s solo exhibitions have taken place in various locations, including China, New York, Singapore, Korea, Hong Kong, and Taiwan. Notable venues include the Taimiao Temple within the Beijing Palace Museum in 2019 and Hong Kong’s Exchange Square in 2017.
Ren Zhe’s artworks have been presented at auction on several occasions, achieving varying realized prices between 300 USD and 323,712 USD. The final price largely depends on factors like the artwork’s dimensions and the materials used. Notably, the highest price ever achieved for a piece by Ren Zhe at auction was 323,712 USD. This record-breaking amount was reached for the artwork titled Infinite Spirit of Allegiance 望龍庭, which was sold at a Sotheby’s auction in Hong Kong during 2021.
