Education & Background
The Luo Brothers, consisting of Luo Wei Dong, Luo Wei Guo, and Luo Wei Bing, create art using various mediums such as paper, lacquered wood panels, and statues made of lacquered resin. Their artworks exude a riotous, kitschy charm, drawing inspiration from the vibrant lights and red lanterns commonly seen in Chinese restaurants and cities during festivals. They incorporate elements of peasant handicrafts with colorful flowers and chubby babies symbolizing prosperity.
Building upon this foundation, the trio includes symbols of China’s new consumerism and the communist revolution, reflecting their country’s evolving culture. The Luo Brothers have showcased their works in solo exhibitions in Paris, Sydney, and Hong Kong and have been part of significant international group shows in various countries.
Invited by the Red Mansion Foundation to participate in the Dream 02 exhibition, which brought together artists from mainland China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan, they have also earned a place in the permanent collections of the Chinese Contemporary Gallery in Beijing and the M+ Museum in Hong Kong.
Their artworks have fetched impressive prices at auctions, with records of US$50,295 (HK$392,301) and US$250,000 (HK$1.95m) set in 2011 and at Sotheby’s in New York, respectively.
